DIONNE Romney Meets 'Peasants With Pitchforks' When Pat Buchanan ran for president in the 1990s, the conservative commentator lovingly referred to his partisans as "peasants with pitchforks." The pitchfork brigade now enjoys more power in Republican politics than even Buchanan thought possible. Mitt Romney is still the Republican front-runner by virtue of the delegates he relentlessly piles up. But Romney keeps failing to bring this slugfest to a close. No matter how much he panders and grovels to the party's right, its supporters will never see him as one of their own. "What a crowd," he said. "I'm really impressed. There must be no one left at Wal-Mart this afternoon." Makes you wonder, doesn't it, what Gingrich was willing to say to the majority of Alabamians who didn't support him. When I heard about Gingrich's Wal-Mart crack, my head hurt, and my heart ached. He tends to have that effect on me in general, but this time my grievances were more specific. Now some of its top money-makers seem to agree. Greg Smith, an executive director at the bank, resigned with a blistering editorial that accused the bank of losing its "moral fiber," putting profits ahead of customers' interests, and dismissing customers as "muppets." READ MORE Send To A Friend >> AROUND THE WORLD Taliban Suspends Negotiations With U.S. The Taliban militant leadership in Afghanistan says they are suspending talks with the United States. According to a statement released Thursday by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, the United States kept changing the terms of the negotiations. Mujahid says that the Taliban only wanted to discuss prisoner transfers and the establishment of a political office in Qatar, but U.S. negotiators sought to broaden the discussion. Mujahid says they did not want the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai included in the talks.
